Rob Mathews: Anthony, thank you for your time.

Anthony Newell:  Thank you.
Rob Mathews:  First off, what made you want to come to Ball State?

Anthony Newell: The atmosphere. The players, we all are a team.  I saw it when I came on my visit. Everybody’s a team.  Everybody picks each other up when we’re down. It just seemed like the best place for me right now. I liked the arena… especially because it’s a big arena – hopefully some nice fans.

Rob Mathews:  What other schools were recruiting you?

Anthony Newell: I had Nebraska, Bradley, Marquette, and I had DePaul too, but they wanted me to go the prep school route.

Rob Mathews:  What areas of your game and conditioning did you work on over the summer?

Anthony Newell: Mostly shooting from 15 and in, posting up, rebounding, a lot of defensive drills, and dribbling drills.

Rob Mathews:  Who is your favorite NBA player? Why?

Anthony Newell: I really like Kevin Garnett. He’s just so versatile.  He does it all. I’ve got a lot of love from him – he’s from Chicago.

Rob Mathews:  How have you been able to fit in on the team?  How is the chemistry so far?

Anthony Newell:  I love the way I’ve started. I’m into it. I think this year looks great. I’m starting to get the hang of it – all of the new things they are throwing at me. I really feel like I can contribute.

Rob Mathews:  In what ways do you expect the college game to be different than high school?

Anthony Newell: I know it’s a lot faster, stronger guys, taller guys. It’s going to be different, but I guess not totally different.  It’s going to be different in many ways, but you’ve got to adjust.

Rob Mathews:  In what ways do you look to contribute this season?

Anthony Newell: Rebounding and defense – just look to get some playing time by rebounding and defending, and on offense, whatever falls in, falls in.

Rob Mathews:  Of your group of newcomers, who is the best three point shooter, rebounder, defender, passer, ball handler?  It is ok to name yourself.

Anthony Newell: I really haven’t seen C. Bass play a lot, so I can’t really comment on him, but I think I’m probably the best rebounder and defender. Three-point shooter, Landon might have me there. I’m the better passer and ball handler. That wasn’t bad at all (laugh).

Rob Mathews:  Tell the fans one interesting fact about yourself.

Anthony Newell: I’m just a fun guy. I love to have fun. When it’s time to get serious, I get serious, but I love to have fun.  I’m outgoing. I love to meet new people. I’m an outgoing guy.  I just let everything flow.

Rob Mathews:  What school topics interest you?  What’s your major (or possibilities)?

Anthony Newell: I really like public relations and communications. I would like to get a job in communications.  I love to just be out there.

Rob Mathews: What types of things do you enjoy doing when you are not studying or playing basketball?
Anthony Newell: Play video games, talk to the family at home. That’s always good. Watching sports on ESPN.  I love sports.

Rob Mathews: Anthony, thank you for your time, welcome to the Cardinal family, and best of luck this season.
Anthony Newell: Thank you.
