On Peyton Stovall...

Peyton Stovall

Peyton Stovall’s outside shot looks much improved. He stepped up and knocked down a couple of three-pointers when his defender ducked under the pick and roll. The one thing about Peyton during the scrimmage is that he looked a little too relaxed and sloppy at times.
 On Darren Yates...
Darren Yates and Coach Buckley share a moment.
Darren Yates started where he left off at Indiana State last year.  His three-point shot looked very good. He also scrapped, grabbed rebounds, played solid defense, and went after loose balls. Yates was easily the leading scorer and star on this day.
On Matt McCollom...
Matt McCollom brings the ball up the floor.
Matt McCollom showed great leadership and poise. He was solid in all facets of the game. His shot looked good, and as usual, he was solid on the boards and got some tough buckets inside. Matt is going to have a big senior year. He will spend a lot of time at the free throw line, which is great because he's the best free throw shooter in the MAC.
 On Dennis Trammell...
Dennis Trammell
Dennis Trammell looked to be playing passively and leading the team. He's mentally tough and proven.
 On Terrance Chapman...
Terrance Chapman shoots freethrows.
Terrance Chapman showed some improved offensive moves and hustle on defense and on the glass. For this team to be successful Terrance has to be a force.
On Anthony Kent and Tom Howland...
Tom Howland jumps against Terrance Chapman
Anthony Kent and Tom Howland looked quite passive, but the inside guys, perhaps because of the players’ knowledge of the offense when playing defense, were not a big part of the day at all.  The guards did not penetrate near as much as normal, which would have also involved the inside players more.
On Anthony Newell...
Anthony Newell can jump out of the gym, just like Coach Buck said.  He out jumped Anthony Kent by nearly a foot on a tip-off.
On Landon Adler and Charles Bass...
Landon Adler and Charles Bass sat out this scrimmage.
Landon Adler and Charles Bass watched the action from the first row of the stands.  Adler went out on the floor and shot threes every chance he got.  His foot looks much healthier than just a few weeks ago.  The kid can flat out shoot the ball.
 On the new walk-ons...
"Juice" with the ball.
Walk-ons Marqus Husband (50) and Juice – I didn’t catch his real name (2) saw limited action.
 Starters?
There is no way a starting lineup could be determined from this scrimmage, but the players that looked the best was pretty clear to most observers – Yates, Stovall, McCollom, Bennett, Mills, and Chapman.  Bennett played some of the best basketball I’ve ever seen him play.
 Overall Observation
Overall, the team is very deep at the guard and forward positions.  Mills and Newell will compete to back-up Chapman.  The guards corps is as good as you will see at this level.  The center position appears to still be a giant mystery, but minimal production from that position could still result in significant success.  In a real game situation I would think that the bigs will get more action due to better spacing and the opponent having considerably less knowledge about our offense and tendencies of individual players.
