January 12th, 2005 7:00PM - Savage Hall - Toledo, Ohio
  • This will be the 66th meeting between Ball State and Toledo in men's basketball.

  • Toledo leads the all time series 34-31.

  • Toledo leads the all time series when games are played in Toledo 21-9.

  • Tim Buckley's Ball State teams are 5-3 vs. Toledo. 2-2 in games played in Toledo.

  • Toledo won the last meeting between the two teams 66-63. The game was played at Savage Hall. Dennis Trammell missed the game with tonsillitis. Terrance Chapman and Cameron Echols lead the Cardinals with 13 points each. Keith Triplett scored 26 for Toledo.

  • Ball State won last years game in Muncie 95-71. Rob Owens lead the Cardinals in that game with 19 points. Dennis Trammell and Cameron Echols added 18 points each. Keith Triplett scored 25 for Toledo.

  • Toledo is 3-0 in Savage Hall so far this season.

  • Ball State is 1-3 on the road this season.

  • Toledo has won 6 MAC regular season championships (1954, 67, 72, 79, 80, and 81).

  • Toledo won the first MAC Tournament in 1980, but has not won one since.

  • Toledo represented the MAC in the NCAA Tournament in 1954, 67, 79, and 80. Their record in the NCAA Tournament is 1-4 with their lone victory coming in 1979 over Iowa. Toledo's 4 NCAA Tournament losses came at the hands of Penn State in 1954, Virginia Tech in 1967, Notre Dame in 1979, and Florida State in 1980.

  • Toledo is 5-6 in the post season NIT.

  • The University of Toledo was founded in 1872 as the Toledo University of Arts and Trades. The school closed in 1878 but re-opened in 1884 as the Manual Training School. Eventually the Manual Training School was renamed Toledo University. In 1967 Toledo University became a state funded school and was re-named the University of Toledo.

  • Toledo' s sports teams were originally know as the Blue and Gold Munies, although it was not an official nickname. In 1923 a student working in the press box at Toledo's football game against Carnegie Tech labeled the team "Skyrockets" at the urge of Pittsburgh sports writers. The sports writers shortened the name to "Rockets" and thus the nickname was born. Attempts have been made over the years to change the nickname to things like Toreadors, Bulls, Commodores, Turtles, Bancroft Highwaymen, and Jeeps. Of course the attempts failed. Personally, I think they should change their name to the "Cross Dressing Klingers" in honor of Toledo resident Jamie Farr or M.A.S.H. fame.

  • Toledo's mascot is known as Rocky the Rocket. In the past he has been a rocket, but currently he is a man in a racing helmet with a rocket pack. The freaky looking wierdos running around UT games in gold hockey masks and wigs are known as Rocket Fanatics and are an officially recognized student spirit group.
