Miller, Hill and Haines Receive College Football News Freshman All-America Honors (12/08/2005)

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Chris Miller (Libertyville, Ill./Carmel H.S.), a redshirt freshman punter for the Ball State University football team, was named to the College Football News Freshman All-America First Team, while Bryant Haines (Piqua, Ohio/Piqua H.S.) was named to the second team, and B.J. Hill (Lanham, Md./Riverdale Baptist H.S.) was named to the third team.
Haines, a redshirt freshman, was named to the second team as a linebacker, and true freshman Hill was named to the third team as a punt returner.
Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection, punted 68 times for 2,917 yards and ranks first in the MAC and 11th in the nation with a 42.9 average. He placed 20 punts inside the opponents 20-yard line, and had a career-long punt of 60 yards at Western Michigan Oct. 8, and vs. Akron Nov. 5. Miller’s 2,917 punt yards ranks as the fifth-best single-season mark in Ball State history, while his 68 punts are the seventh most in a single year in Ball State annals. His 42.9 punt average ranks as the fifth best in Ball State history. Miller punted for 430 yards vs. Bowling Green Sept. 10, and that mark ranks as the eighth highest single-game mark in Ball State history. His 425 punt yards at Iowa Sept. 3, is the ninth best single-game total in Ball State’s record books.
Haines led the Cardinals in total tackles with 83 (43 solos, 40 assists). He also added seven tackles for loss, one sack, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one blocked kick. Haines managed a career-high 16 tackles in Ball State’s five overtime 60-57 win at Western Michigan. He also tallied 11 tackles in Ball State’s game vs. Toledo Oct. 15.
Hill had 18 punt returns for 200 yards and one touchdown. His 11.1 average ranks 24th in the country in the latest NCAA statistics plus was second in the MAC. In addition, Hill was Ball State’s second leading rusher with 82 carries for 420 yards and two touchdowns. His 5.1 yards-per-carry average was the best among Ball State’s tailbacks in 2005.
Hill and Miller were earlier selected to the Rivals.com Freshman All-America Second Team.
