Ball State Names Two Assistant Football Coaches; Promotes Two Others (03/13/2006)

FROM BALL STATE ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Sidney Powell and John Powers have been named assistant football coaches at Ball State University, according to Ball State head coach Brady Hoke. In addition, Stan Parrish, who served as Ball State’s quarterbacks coach last year, has been promoted to offensive coordinator, and Ed Stults, who was the offensive coordinator plus coached tackles and tight ends last season, has been promoted to assistant head coach.
The staff adjustments were made after Ted Huber retired as BSU’s assistant head coach, and Eric Lewis left as the Cardinals’ secondary coach to take a position with the Green Bay Packers.
"We are excited to add these two individuals to our staff," Hoke says. "They bring a great deal of experience, and will be excellent additions to our current staff."
Powell will coach the secondary for the Cardinals. He spent the last two seasons at the University of Massachusetts as the defensive back coach. Powell, who coached Atlantic 10 Conference First-Team choice Shannon James last fall, helped the Minutemen rank first in the nation in scoring defense in NCAA Division IAA. Massachusetts also led the conference in total defense, pass defense and pass defense efficiency, and James was the 2004 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-American. Powell spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons as the defensive backs coach at Northeastern University, and the 2000 and 2001 campaigns at Sacred Heart University. He also served in the National Football League’s Summer Internship Program as a defensive backfield assistant for the Seattle Seahawks in the summer of 2001.
A 1997 graduate of Morehouse College where he was a three-year starter and four-year letterwinner on the football team, Powell began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at UMass in 1998 and 1999. He and his wife, Charmer, have one son, Brandon.
Powers, who has spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at Lehigh University, will coach the offensive line for the Cardinals. Powers coached the offensive line in each of the last five seasons at Lehigh, and had served as the recruiting coordinator since January of 2004. Prior to Lehigh, Powers spent from 1997-2000 as the offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and run game coordinator at Columbia University. He began his fulltime coaching duties at Wagner College where he coached the offensive line and recruiting coordinator for the 1995 and 1996 seasons, and was at Wagner for the 1992 season. Powers spent the 1993 and 1994 campaigns as a graduate assistant at Columbia.
A 1990 graduate of Villanova where he was a two-year letterwinner and a member of the 1989 Yankee Conference Championship Team, Powers spent the 1986-87 academic year in the U.S. Naval Academy. He and his wife, Shannon, have two daughters.
