The Series and Interesting Facts

This will be the first meeting between Ball State and North Dakota State in football.
  • This is North Dakota State's third season in Division 1-AA.

  • This will be the first time North Dakota State has played a program classified in the highest division of college football since they played Missouri in 1956.

  • North Dakota State is 1-18-1 against teams that were classified in the highest division of college football when the game was played. The win was against Northern Illinois in 1969 when Northern Illinois was in their first year of University Division football and before they were a member of the MAC.

  • North Dakota State is 3-22-2 all time against teams who are currently in the highest division of NCAA college football - Division 1-A.

  • North Dakota State has played 3 games against teams who are currently in the MAC. While they have never beaten a MAC team, they are 2-0-1 against teams who are now in the MAC.

  • Northern Illinois was an NCAA College Division Independent when they played NDSU in 1968 and and a University Division Independent in 1969. Both Games were won by North Dakota State.

  • Eastern Michigan was an NCAA College Division Independent when they played NDSU in 1970. The game ended in a tie.

  • In 1965 Ball State and North Dakota State each finished undefeated with NCAA College Division National Championships. Ball State was the Mideast Region Champion and North Dakota State was the Midwest Region Champion. North Dakota State was voted the College Division National Champion by both AP and UPI. Had there been a playoff like there is now in the lower divisions it is quite possible NDSU and BSU could have played each other for the National Championship.

  • North Dakota State has won 8 National Championships in the lower divisions of NCAA Football. The first three, 1965, 68, and 69 came by way of wire AP and UPI wire service voting. the next 5, 1983, 85, 86, 88, and 90 came on the field through a playoff.

  • North Dakota State's athletic teams were known as "Farmers" in the late 1800's. In the early 1900's the nickname changed to Aggies. In 1919 the name changed to Bison because the players didn't like the name Aggies.

  • Before each game, home or away, North Dakota State players slap a picture of a snorting Bison before taking the field. This tradition started in 1964 and since then North Dakota State has an amazing record of 356-103-4 which is 77%.

  • North Dakota State joins the Mid-Continent Conference in all sports but football this season. The Mid-Con of course features Indiana teams IUPUI and IPFW. Another Indiana school, Valparaiso, who was a flagship in the Mid-Continent has left the league and joined (gag) Butler in the Horizon League.
