It was a night of surprises. Some nice. Some not so nice.

First, the weather. The forecast was ominous. Many inches or rain were supposed to ruin tailgate party time, and the weather was supposed to turn dangerously severe around game time. The chance of precipitation was 100%. The weather forecast undoubtedly kept tailgating to a fraction of what it normally is. Turns out it was sunny through most of tailgating time and the rain held off until the forth quarter of the game. That rain was nothing more than a heavy mist even then.
During the surprisingly sunny tailgate party time, speculation based on history was that the alumni and locals would not show up for the game due to the threat of rain, but the student crowd would show up. Not in the numbers they came out for against Indiana or even Eastern Michigan, but the consensus was that the student crowd would be decent. Surprise! The alumni and locals came out and the students didn't. There very well might have been more North Dakota State fans in Sheumann Stadium than Ball State students. Possibly the student crowd was another victim of the weather forecast. It was Family Weekend which in the past has impacted football attendance in a positive way. With a horrible weather forecast, students and their families possibly made drier plans.
Finally, the game. The Ball State team knew NDSU was a good football team. The team vowed not to be the seventh Division 1-A team to lose to a Division 1-AA team this year. The Ball State football team knows what the mindset is of football team put in the situation NDSU was put in as they themselves have been in a similar situation all too often. No way the Cardinals would over look the Bison, right? Well, maybe they did or maybe they didn't. Regardless, the Cardinals came out flat, void of emotion, and didn't give their best effort. The end result is that NDSU flat out kicked their tails. They wanted it more.
