The Series

34th Meeting - Ball State leads the all time series 18-13-2.
LAST MEETING: October 29 - in DeKalb - Ball State 31, Northern Illinois 17. To say Ball State beat Northern Illinois last year would be an understatement. Ball State destroyed Northern Illinois. The game was not as close as the final score. The Cardinals had 24 points on the board and half the third quarter was gone before sloppy NIU finally scored a point. The Cardinals gathered in an interception, two fumbles, and held the Huskies to 1-11 on third down which limited them to a whopping 16+ minute time of possession deficit. BSU put up 382 yards of total offense, lead by Charles Wynn who rushed for 122 yards and caught 6 passes for 33 more. Chuck also had a 6 yard touchdown run. NIU still managed to win the MAC West but was defeated by Akron in the MAC Championship Game 31-30.
LAST MEETING IN MUNCIE: October 30, 2004 - Northern Illinois 38, Ball State 31 - In Overtime
  • Northern Illinois is riding a 3 game winning streak in Scheumann Stadium.

  • The Ball State/Northern Illinois rivalry has been a streaky one. Northern Illinois had won 6 straight games against Ball State prior to last year. Before that Ball State ran off winning streaks of 7 and 9 games straight against NIU dating back to 1974. The two streaks were separated by 1 win for the Huskies in 1983. In the years before 1974, Northern Illinois had the upper hand and went 7 straight years without Ball State beating them. The Cardinals did manage a tie in 1971.

  • NIU entered the MAC in 1973 at the same time Ball State did. NIU struggled to compete in the MAC and in 1987 NIU decided they would be better off as an independent like Notre Dame. NIU was 2-12 against the Cardinals during their first MAC stint, but they did win 1 MAC Championship in 1983. Northern had very limited success as an independent and joined the Big West Conference in 1993 where they were even less successful. In 1997 they managed to rejoin the MAC and after a couple of years where they battled with BSU for the nations longest losing streak, Joe Novak found a winning form and have been near the top of the conference ever since.

  • Ball State and Northern Illinois are the only teams in the MAC to ever lose to North Dakota State. Northern Illinois has done it TWICE.
