FROM BALL STATE ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Wendell Brown (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King H.S.), a junior linebacker on the Ball State University football team, and Brian Jackson (Dothan, Ala./Northview H.S.), a senior placekicker for the Cardinals, have been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.
The two were honored for their performances in Ball State’s 20-17 win at Toledo last Tuesday.

Brown led Ball State’s defense with 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and one pass breakup in the Cardinals win. The victory marked Ball State’s first win at Toledo since the 1991 season.

Jackson, who is one of 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top placekicker, nailed an 18-yard field goal with 1:55 left in the third period to give Ball State a 17-14 lead, and then connected on a 27-yard field goal with 6:27 to play in the game to give the Cardinals the 20-17 victory.

This marked the first time in Brown’s career that he has received the honor, while Jackson received the weekly award from the conference for the second time this season.

Ball State is 4-7 overall and 4-3 in the MAC and will complete the 2006 season with a Friday home game vs. Kent State at Scheumann Stadium.
