Buffalo Trivia and Fun Facts

  • Prior to 1971 Buffalo competed as a Division 1-A independent.
  • Buffalo dropped football in 1971.
  • Buffalo resumed playing football in 1977, in the National Junior College Athletic Association.
  • From 1978-1992 Buffalo competed in the NCAA as a Division III independent.
  • From 1993-1998 Buffalo competed in NCAA Division 1-AA.
  • Buffalo rejoined Division 1-A in 1999 and became a member of the MAC.
  • University at Buffalo was founded in 1946 as a private medical school known as the University OF Buffalo.
  • In 1960 the State University of New York bought the University of Buffalo and it became the University AT Buffalo, The State University of New York, or the University at Buffalo.
  • The first chancellor of the University of Buffalo was United States President Millard Fillmore. Fillmore even acted as UB Chancellor while he was President.
  • In the early 60's UB had a nuclear fission reactor on campus. The reactor was abandoned early on and was decommissioned in 2005. The only apparent product of the reactor is Victor E. Bull who is rumored not to be a guy in a royal Bull costume, but rather a mutant created in the reactor.
  • In 1957 Actress Elizabeth Taylor gave University of Buffalo a young black angus bull to act as their "live" mascot. The Bull was named "Buster" and Buster roamed the sideline during Bull football games. Buffalo was very successful with Buster as their mascot as the Bulls posted back-to-back 8-1 seasons in 1958 and 1959. Rumor has it however that after the 4-6 1960 season Buster was served as the main course at the team awards dinner.

The Last Meeting: October 7, 2006 in Buffalo - Ball State 55, Buffalo 25

Ball State blistered Buffalo in the first half and then coasted in the second, resulting in a 55-25 spanking of the Bulls. Ball State scored on all five first half possessions while limiting Buffalo to only 5 first half rushing yards and 121 total. Trailing 45-3 late in the third quarter Buffalo drew some enthusiasm from a 43 yard interception return for touchdown by Kareem Byrom and then outscored the Cardinals 15-10 in the fourth quarter but it was far too little and far too late to even make the score look respectable. The win was Ball State's fifth over Buffalo with no defeats.
Nate Davis was 11-14 with one interception and threw for three touchdowns in the game. B.J. Hill scored two touchdowns and ran for 116 yards on 28 carries. MiQuale Lewis added 99 yards rushing and a touchdown.  The Cardinals totaled 232 yards rushing on the day as compared to only 43 for Buffalo. Darius Hill caught 4 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns to lead Ball State which gained a total of 262 yards through the air. Buffalo quarterback Drew Willy had his best career day through the air against Ball State going 27-40 for 321 yards, two touchdowns, and 1 interception. Both of the touchdowns however came in the forth quarter after the game had long been decided.
