Notes |
|
MAC
Implications |
| This
game has huge implications with regard
to winning the MAC championship.
Central Michigan has already defeated
both Northern Illinois and Toledo in
West Division play. A Chippewa victory
would be a devastating blow to Ball
State's chances of claiming the West
Division crown and playing in the MAC
Championship Game. If defeated, BSU
will only be able to pray that CMU is
defeated by either struggling Western
Michigan or lowly Eastern Michigan and
the championship is thrown to
tie-breakers. This is a must win game
and Cardinal fans should treat it like
it is for the MAC Championship,
because it quite possibly is. |
|
A
Sea of Red |
| Coach
Hoke has asked that Ball State fans
attend the game wearing red. He and
the team would like to see a sea of
red. |
|
Quiet
Please... Offense at Work! - Yell Like
Crazy on Defense |
| Coach
Hoke has also asked that Ball State
fans be extremely loud when Central
Michigan has the ball. The Chippewas
employ an offense that depends on many
audible calls (play changes) at the
line of scrimmage based on the
defensive alignment and instruction
from the sideline. Crowd noise can
cause major problems for them as
players will not be able to hear
instructions coming from the
quarterback. Conversely,
BSU fans should remain rather quiet
when the Cardinals have the ball, as
BSU uses similar tactics. These are
very simple guidelines for creating a
strong home field advantage that quite
frankly Ball State fans (not including
the student crowd) historically have
failed to provide. Do your part and truly
be the loudest crowd in the MAC...
when Central Michigan has the ball. |

- Rumor
has it that following 2006 head
coach Brian Kelly's departure to
University of Cincinnati there was
a serious effort to change the
name of Kelly/Shorts Stadium to
Kelly Eat My Shorts Stadium. That
is just a rumor.

The
Last Meeting: October 14, 2006
in Mount Pleasant - Central
Michigan 18, Ball State 7
|
| The
Cardinals appeared to have
momentum during the first
few series of the game
which were played mostly
in CMU territory. Then a
freak wind aided 78 yard
punt that pinned the
Cardinals deep in their
own territory turned the
field position battle, and
the games momentum in
favor of the Chippewas.
Central held Ball State to
three and out on the next
series, then drove 62
yards in 8 plays to record
the first score of the
game; a 15 yard run by
quarterback Dan LeFevour
with 3:01 remaining in the
first quarter. Following
the touchdown, CMU tried a
trick play in an attempt
to score a two point
conversion but it failed.
Lefevour's touchdown would
be the only scoring play in the
first half. The half time
score could have been more
lopsided in favor of
Central Michigan,
but Ball State's Amara
Koroma intercepted a pass
at the 1 yard line on fourth down and goal to
prevent a second Chippewa
score. Following the
interception, pinned deep
in their own territory BSU
turned to dependable veteran
5th year senior
quarterback Joey Lynch to
lead them out of trouble.
Joey promptly threw an
interception to CMU's Josh
Gordy and Central Michigan
was again in scoring
position at the BSU 13
yard line. CMU could not
turn this turnover into
points however as they
were stopped by the
Cardinal defense and
kicker Rick Albreski who
missed a 30 yard field
goal. |
| In
the second half, the score
would remain 6-0 Central
Michigan until mid way
through the third quarter
when Dan Lefevour lengthened
the Chippewa lead on a 3
yard touchdown run that
capped a 13 play 76 yard
drive. The two point conversion
attempt on this touchdown
failed as well and Central
Michigan led 12-0. The
Ball State offense finally
got something going and
turned in a long drive of
their own, going 69 yards
in 13 plays, with Brad
Salyer scoring on a 1 yard
touchdown run. Brian
Jackson's PAT made the
score Central Michigan 12,
Ball State 7. The
Cardinals then force
Central Michigan to punt,
but B.J. Hill fumbled the
punt return and gave the
ball back to the Chippewas
inside the BSU 10 yard
line. Two plays later CMU
put the game away, scoring
on a 1 yard plunge by
fullback Marcel Archer.
The PAT again failed. Ball
State would threaten one
more time but stall one
inch from the endzone.
Final score Central
Michigan 18, Ball State 7. |
| Central
Michigan would out gain
Ball State 344 to 213 on
the day. Ball State could
only muster 53 rushing
yards on 25 attempts. Nate
Davis was 23-29 for 160
yards, no touchdowns, and
1 interception. Dan
LeFevour would have a
similar day, going 18-30
for 171 yards with no
touchdowns and 1
interception. He would
lead CMU in rushing with
18 carries for 75 yards
and 2 touchdowns. |
