Ball State jumped on IU early and often, leading 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. Joey Lynch connected on two touchdown passes. One a 2 yard pass to Brad Salyer. The other a 7 yard pass to Terry Moss. The Cardinals added a 52 yard Brian Jackson field goal to their lead before Indiana would get on the board. The Hooiser's score coming when Marcus Thigpen returned the kickoff after Brian Jackson's field goal 100 yards for a touchdown. Ball State would strike again in the final minute of the half when Joey Lynch connected with Darius Hill on a 41 yard touchdown strike. Brian Jackson missed the PAT, an error that would prove to have a major effect on the final outcome. Halftime score, Ball State 23, Indiana 7.  A pleasant late summer evening turned putrid in the second half as a menacing drizzle and rain dampened the crowd of nearly 24,000. With the rain came the Indiana offense. IU's third string quarterback, Kellen Lewis, who replaced starter Graeme McFarland six plays into the game, would lead the Hoosiers on two touchdown drives in the third quarter. One a 12 yard pass to James Hardy and the second ending in a 23 yard touchdown run by Marcus Thigpen. Indiana would get the final points needed for victory 4 minutes into the fourth quarter when Austin Starr would connect on a 35 yard field goal. The scoring drive was aided by a personal foul on Ball State that put IU into position to kick the winning field goal. Final score, IU 24 Ball State 23.
