On the Road Again

It took me years to figure out the key to traveling when it comes to conference play: just keep the bags packed!  Last week was definitely a situation where that travel tip came in handy.  We spent the majority of four days on road last week as we traveled to Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois, which seemed like the eternal trek, partially because our bus driver insisted on the longest routes known to mankind!   On Wednesday, we game out extremely flat against Eastern and paid a heavy price.  They are clearly one of the best teams in our league and jumped up to a substantial lead very early; one which we could not dig ourselves out of despite a much better second half.  That loss ended our five-game win streak and made us all realize that a little momentum only takes you so far if you don’t come ready to play.  Saturday at Northern improved slightly, although we again came out of the gates a little slow.  It was a nasty game, filled with too many turnovers and a ton of fouls, but, thank god, we came out on top.  I do think our team showed a lot of character in the closing minutes as we came up with big stops and scores.  There is something to be said about winning ugly.  With only six games left until the MAC tournament begins, I would really like to see us play up to our potential.  Plus, I think that is going to be what it takes to get a win against a very talented Bowling Green team on Tuesday (for first place).  We met with our sports psychologist, Chris Carr, after practice today to get us refocused on the games ahead. (I am a big believer in the benefits of working on your mental game as well as your physical game.)  I am getting pumped about tomorrow’s game! At this point in the year, home or away, you just have to take ‘em one at a time.

Ball State Women’s Basketball player Kate Endress is kind enough to share a weekly journal with GoBSU.com readers. Kate, a senior from Evansville (Evansville Memorial H.S.), was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team last season as well as being first team All-MAC. Kate is a likely candidate for MAC Player Of The Year this season, as well as all the academic awards she will undoubtedly receive. It is a very special treat to have Kate share this journal with us. Thank you Kate!
